SPMI's FOCUS GROUP - METRICS MANAGEMENT FOR PROJECT MANAGERS
METRICS MANAGEMENT For PROJECT MANAGERS
17th March,2010 (Wednesday), 6:30 pm to 9 pm
Facilitator : Ravindranath Pandian
Metrics are meaningful indicators of reality. The case for metrics is rather old. But the case for metrics in project management is relatively new. The barriers have melted away and metrics have emerged as a factor in quantitative project management. On the one hand metrics are used in performance measurement and modeling. On the other, metrics have fueled simulation methods. Creating and using metrics to advantage requires an approach that combines data with intuition. The following are specific benefits from using metrics through such an approach:
• "Goal Deployment"
• Innovation
• Performance Measurement and Improvement
• Estimation Model Building
• Decision Analysis
• Risk Management
• Simulation
The ROI from metrics, seen from the above list, is both short term and long term. Managing metrics means managing both short term and long term - an art few have perfected. Well known is the fact that metrics help in process control and problem solving; less known is the fact that metrics is a journey that bridges several gaps between reality and management. In spite of this wealth of potential benefits, much desires to be done in managing metrics. This lecture will remove the myths and misgivings in using metrics in projects. Simple case studies will be used to illustrate the benefits.
